Nixie Clock
I've wanted to build a nixie tube clock for quite a while. I ran across pictures of one on the internet several years ago and have been planning my own ever since. A few weeks ago I found a set of six Soviet-made IN-14 tubes that had been salvaged from old equipment and were being sold for only $34, after shipping from Ukraine. I like to listen to music while I do homework or work on projects like those featured on this site. Waiting for Google Chrome to start and using the full resources it requires seems a bit wasteful and I thought it would be interesting to delve into the world of terminal-based music players so I installed MPD and ncmpcpp. Read more
Installing Arch Linux on a Dell Inspiron 5547
I finally replaced my old laptop and removed Windows 8.1 to install Arch Linux. Along the way I learned how to install UEFI boot loaders for linux and had a few minor issues with the Intel HDA/ALC3234 sound card and backlight brightness buttons, but I was able to resolve them. Read more
New Website
After spammers started submitting comments to my old wordpress site I decided I had had enough. I didn't like the way it handled pages, especially when trying to make a project-oriented blog. It's a nice CMS in theory but quickly becomes annoying to manage or edit. I found a template and started working on a new site. Read more
NAS ZFS Upgrade
When I first built my NAS it was on a very small budget. After a few years of running only a single-drive setup I was starting to get worried about the drive failing and losing data. I had already replaced the OS disk once so I was all-too-familiar with what could go wrong. Read more
